Something I Hate about Something I Love

Star Wars: The Old Republic is one of my favorite games. I’ve been a subscriber since launch and, while I definitely have dry spells where I don’t play it for a while, I always enjoy myself when I really get into it. There is one (in my opinion) glaring graphical flaw which really nags at me whenever I play, though. That flaw is draw distance. For grass. That’s kind of a complicated thing to write about, so I made a video:

Hopefully, from the video you can see why low draw distance on flora can be irritating on a high-end rig. And as much as I might like to complain about it, I would think it’s the developers who would want this corrected more than anybody. It’s the one visual thing taking away from the immersion of these otherwise beautiful environments. I can’t for the life of me figure out why, in three years, this still hasn’t been fixed. We’re talking about a tweak here. Not a major overhaul, not even a bug fix, but a tweak. A UI element (like a slider) which allows players to change an unlocked value in an INI file.

That’s all anyone’s asking for. This drives me absolutely crazy when I’m running around a place like Alderaan where there is even more well-lit grassland to explore. It looks ridiculous to just have this 50′ circle of grass around you, which travels with you, and everything else just looks barren. Knowing my computer can handle the render, but that BioWare won’t let me do it… there’s blood on your hands, BioWare. Varactyl blood.
